Hall finds a highwire on which she balances her act between transcendence and goofiness.
One of the goals of the “holy fools” of clowning is to “place a smile on the face, a tear on the soul,” and Hall succeeds at this superbly. This is clowning with no buffoonery or pratfalls, only a touching lamentation on the fragility of beauty and artistry contrasted against her staggering rendering of Bach’s music which attests to the eternity of both.
Karen’s style is personable and versatile, drawing the audience into conversation like your BFF one moment, teetering on the edge of insanity the next... It’s a little 'Mozart in The Jungle' with a touch of Lily Tomlin and a whole lot of originality.
An accomplished cellist and tremendous actress as well, Hall brings audiences into her world, sharing her head space, emotions, and exquisite musical talent.
Away from the music, Hall is also a fine performer, her comic timing as impeccable as her playing. She knows not only when a note is needed but, just as importantly, when there is a need for a silence. In doing so she leaves us time to absorb her words.
